Echoes of the Shattered

The past belongs to no single present.

Nine people in nine broken realms each live by a gift for reading what others leave behind: an archivist who opens the crystallised moments of the dead, a stone-reader who hears the lives held in hillsides, a woman who eats grief for a living. Then, in the medium each of them knows best, the same call arrives. One word. Cradle. Nine roads lead to the same place, and something there has been waiting a very long time.

Cradle's Veil

It isn't finished.

Six weeks after the restoration, an echo arrives at the Archive that nobody could have fixed: the hollow where nine roads meet, seen from the Cradle's side. The Cradle can feel the whole length of itself again, and it has something to show the nine who answered. There is an inside. At its edge is a veil, and on the far side the mist is rising. One by one they are called back, deeper this time, towards the place where the breaking began.

When Realms Become One

The roads are getting shorter.

Since the Veil, the nine realms have begun to show through one another. At dusk the crystal bridge in Lyrinth shows the stone towers of Grannakh, faint in the air and a little clearer every week, and the roads between the cities are getting shorter. Then a grey cord turns up at the edge of the shimmer, pulled tight as though something on the far end were pulling, with an echo knotted at its heart. The realms are coming together. Someone has spent a very long time making sure they never would.

About

The author

Grant Anthony was born in Paisley and works as a practice manager in Scottish general practice. He writes fiction as Grant C Anthony and nonfiction as G C Anthony.

His thrillers and Scottish noir lean on real places and real science: Glasgow, Paisley and Renfrewshire, the history of consciousness research, the trade in art and its forgeries.

In fantasy he is writing The Dimming Canopy, a five-book epic set in Thessaria, where a fortress holds its border with dragon fire and a wandering people listen to the roots: a series about power, restraint, and what a bond costs when it is used without asking. Alongside it is the Veilborn trilogy, which follows nine characters from nine broken realms.

His nonfiction grows out of years spent close to how people cope, and don't, with their own minds.

He is also a photographer.
