Cradle's Veil
It isn't finished.
Six weeks after the restoration, an echo arrives at the Archive that nobody could have fixed: the hollow where nine roads meet, seen from the Cradle's side. The Cradle can feel the whole length of itself again, and it has something to show the nine who answered. There is an inside. At its edge is a veil, and on the far side the mist is rising. One by one they are called back, deeper this time, towards the place where the breaking began.
The opening
The echo arrived on a Tuesday, in a crate of eleven, from a recovery site that should not have produced it.
Tselin had been at the long table since seven. The north-facing windows were bright and cold behind her, and the collection-cloth in front of her held the morning's work: domestic echoes from a merchant's house on the Shardwater, three of them dull and four of them lovely, a cook's afternoon and a child's birthday and a man reading a letter twice. She had logged them. Origin, date-estimate, recovery location, condition. She had set them aside.
She had opened seven thousand and sixty-one moment-echoes in seventeen years and four months. She noted the number the way she always noted it, without pride, as a fact about the work. What she noted now, and had been noting for six weeks, was that the number no longer felt like a wall built one brick at a time. It felt like what it was: seven thousand and sixty-one people who had stood somewhere and felt something and left it behind without meaning to.
It was warm the way a hand was warm when someone had just let go of it.Cradle's Veil
