When Realms Become One
The roads are getting shorter.
Since the Veil, the nine realms have begun to show through one another. At dusk the crystal bridge in Lyrinth shows the stone towers of Grannakh, faint in the air and a little clearer every week, and the roads between the cities are getting shorter. Then a grey cord turns up at the edge of the shimmer, pulled tight as though something on the far end were pulling, with an echo knotted at its heart. The realms are coming together. Someone has spent a very long time making sure they never would.
The opening
At dusk the crystal bridge showed Grannakh.
It had not always. For the first weeks after the Veil it had shown only what it had always shown, which was Lyrinth: the towers in their impossible geometries, the light coming off every face of them and splitting and going on, so that a person crossing at evening walked through a hundred small rainbows and did not look at any of them, because they had seen them every evening of their lives. Then, in the eighth week, the light had begun to go somewhere else.
Tselin stood at the eastern rail, where she stood every evening now, and watched it go.
