The Calibrated Mind

By G C Anthony

You are not broken. You are miscalibrated.

Your brain is a prediction machine, and anxiety is what happens when its forecasts of danger run hot. A clear guide to how fear is learned, why reassurance and avoidance keep it in place, and how it can be recalibrated.

From the book

From the opening

Almost everyone who lives with anxiety arrives at the same question. It tends to come late, after the thing has happened again, when the worst of it has passed and only the tiredness is left.

If I know my fear isn't rational, why does it still feel so real?

You can know it. The person in the middle of a panic attack often knows, even then, that a racing heart is not a heart attack.

The body answers as though the danger were already in the room. The knowing and the feeling come apart, and you are left somewhere between the two.

Here is the part that changes things. Your brain does not wait for the world and then react to it. It runs slightly ahead, predicting what is about to happen and readying you for it.

Anxiety is not a failure of logic. It is what happens when the predictions have been tuned toward danger. And a system that has been tuned can be tuned again. The Calibrated Mind
The Calibrated MindThe smoke alarm isn't broken.

It goes off when the toast browns because it is doing the one thing alarms do. What has moved is the threshold. Anxiety works the same way: the signals are real, and the point where they get read as an emergency has shifted.
